Providing continuing professional education and practice development through quality local seminars, workshops, conferences, awards, professional networks and general meetings.

The Hunter Sub-Branch enjoys a high local profile within the Newcastle-Hunter community, and high membership and participation within the mental health nursing workforce.

We work in partnership with a number of key agencies including: Hunter New England Mental Health, the University of Newcastle - School of Nursing & Midwifery, Lingard Private Hospital, NGO’s and other service providers - Supporting mental health in our community.

A Hunter Sub-Branch Executive is elected annually by local members, providing management and leadership of all local operations and wider representation of College and professional issues at State and national levels.

Our members (mental health nurses) work throughout metropolitan districts of Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Maitland, and rural communities including Morisset, Cessnock, Port Stephens, Lower and Upper Hunter.

Mental health nurses work in the public and private health sectors, hospital, community, primary health care/general practice and tertiary education across clinical, management, health administration, research, and education fields.

The majority of mental health nurses are employed by Hunter New England Health (Mental Health), in hospital and community multi-disciplinary teams, providing clinical and nursing services to people and their families with mental illness. This includes a range of specialist services from child and adolescence to older people, acute adult psychiatry, rehabilitation, dual diagnosis alcohol & drug services, and forensic psychiatry.

Wherever there is a need for mental health services, there are mental health nurses working in partnership with other health care professionals, families and non-government agencies.

ABOUT GWS REGIONAL BRANCH

The Greater Western Sydney Regional Branch (GWS RB) was established in 2003. The Branch encompasses all the areas bounded by the LGAs of Lithgow, Campbelltown, Auburn, and Hawkesbury and includes for example, the Hills District, Parramatta, and Blue Mountains. However our membership is not limited to these areas.

Our members (mental health nurses) work across the public and private sector in a range of settings. Their various specialty areas cover the lifespan and they work in the contexts of acute care, rehabilitation, crisis work, case management, consultation liaison, drug and alcohol/dual diagnosis, primary care, and forensic mental health services. In addition to clinical practice, members also work in the areas of education, research, and management and with non-government organisations and other networks.

The Branch’s key roles are to provide members and other mental health workers opportunities for education and professional development, and to provide professional representation for mental health nursing locally.

OUR AIMS

  • To share information, encourage inquiry, and promote education through our annual conference and three education forums each year.
  • To facilitate opportunities for professional discussion and to strengthen professional networks.
  • To encourage knowledge sharing and dissemination of differing perspectives between members, nurses, those with an interest in mental health, and other agencies.
  • To contribute to future directions for the mental health nursing profession locally.
  • To provide links to and updates about the work of the College broadly.

GENERAL MEETINGS
These are held at Cumberland Hospital Nurse Education Centre (NEC) on the 2nd Thursday – February, May, August (AGM), and November.

EDUCATION FORUMS
Education forums are presented on the second Tuesday of February, July and November at the Nurse Education Centre, Cumberland Hospital, Westmead. A flyer is circulated via email prior to each event. Forums are free of charge and include light refreshments.

The current education series, running over two years, highlights mental health issues across life stages. In 2011 the February Forum explored the role of mental health nurses providing a holistic approach to women and their families during the perinatal period. The July Forum explored themes specific to childhood, when the foundations for later health and wellbeing are established. The final forum in November 2011 will focus on adolescence. During 2012 the education forums will highlight adult, midlife and mature adult issues relevant to mental health nursing.

Previous Education Forums

  • July 2011: Behaviour Management Strategies from Birth to 12 Years. Margaret Bannister (NUM) and Judith Milton (RN), Child and Family Unit, Redbank House.
  • February 2011: Perinatal and Infant Mental Health a Frontier of the Future. Julie Ferguson.
  • November 2010: Rural and Remote Emergency Mental Health Education. Dr Tracy Robinson, Program Leader for Education, Centre for Rural and Remote Mental Health.
  • July 2010:  Clinical Leadership: Is it the panacea we all think? Judy Mannix, Director of Postgraduate Studies and Head of Program, Master of Nursing (Clinical Leadership) at the University of Western Sydney.
February 2010: Circles of Careperson centred practice development model for people with behavioural and psychosocial symptoms of dementia. Judi Weaver, CNC Dementia Behaviour Management Advisory Service, NSCC, SMHSOP.

The annual conference is usually held on the last Friday of March each year, at The Sebel in Parramatta. It is the first conference of the year on the ACMHN calendar. The Conference promotes expansion of mental health nursing knowledge, philosophies, principles, contemporary practices and research by offering mental health nurses the opportunity to meet and hear from mental health professionals with diverse knowledge and expertise in a wide range of mental health contexts.

The conference organising committee are keen to ensure that the conference is accessible to students and beginning/novice nurses. To this end, the committee welcome novice presenters to submit abstracts and offer opportunities for them to practice presentations prior to the conference. Additionally, six complimentary conference registrations are offered to pre-registration and post graduate nursing students each year.
