Scope of Practice

What do mental health nurses do?

We know what we do... but how do we explain this to others?

The ACMHN has recently been funded by the Pratt Foundation to undertake a Scope of Practice research project, in an effort to more clearly articulate what it is that mental health nurses do.

Mental health nurses work in a huge variety of clinical, educational and research areas:

  • private and public services,
  • primary, secondary and tertiary care
  • across the age range from birth to death
  • across the illness spectrum, from prevention, to early intervention, treatment and continuing care
  • with clients who have serious mental illness, mental health problems, crisis situations, relationship problems, couples and families

you name it, we're there!

Part one of the project is a Literature Review. Part two of the project will be discussions and interviews with mental health nurses - to discuss and define what it is that we do.
