The Australian College of Mental Health Nurses Accreditation Committee receives applications from providers of professional events, educational activities or products, to review and endorse their products. We assess all applications according to the guidelines we have established - these include issues such as whether or not the organisation is a reputable provider, whether their program is of high quality, whether it is evidence based and consistent with contemporary mental health practice, issues and trends.

Certified Infant Massage Instructor Training Program

This nationally recognised accredited training course provides participants with the specific knowledge, skills and insights required to deliver parent education programs in Infant Massage, in accordance with guidelines of the International Association of Infant Massage. The course consists of a four-day face-to-face component, followed up by self-directed learning activities and practical. On completion of the IAIM certification program, you will be able to teach the IAIM First Touch Program™, infant massage courses and positive forms of touch to parents/carers, with the specific goal of enhancing bonding, promoting infant mental and physical health, and providing early intervention and support to parents and babies. Upon completion of the course, graduates can elect to be issued with a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment in Certified Infant Massage Instruction.

Treating Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

Presented by Dr Leah Giarratano

This two-day program presents a highly practical and interactive workshop (case-based) for treating traumatised patients; the content is applicable to both adult and adolescent populations. Techniques are largely cognitive behavioural, evidence-based, and will be immediately useful and effective for your clinical practice. The emphasis is upon imparting practical skills and up-to-date research in this area.

Mental Health Professional Online Development


MHPOD is a new, evidence-based learning resource for people working in mental health produced in Australia, with around 70 hours of material across 45 topics. All topics are based on the National Practice Standards for the Mental Health Workforce. The ACMHN has recently endorsed MHPOD for CPE purposes for its members.

Introduction to Diabetes for Mental Health Workers

Diabetes Australia – Vic, through funding from The NDSS (National Diabetes Services Scheme) have developed an online diabetes program for workers in the mental health sector.

Participants will gain increased knowledge of diabetes, learn who should be screened and referred for diagnosis and management, and understand the bi-directional relationship between diabetes and a mental illness to better manage both conditions.

The three case study modules take approximately 2 hours to complete and cover the following topics:

•   Types of diabetes ( type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes)
•   How to identify those at high risk
•   Screening and diagnosis of diabetes
•   Prevention and management of diabetes, including the burden of ongoing self management
•   Complications of diabetes, and the impact of diabetes complications on quality of life and well being
•   The strong association between diabetes and mental health problems.

Skills for Psychological Recovery

Skills for Psychological Recovery (SPR) is a 6 hour skills-based workshop on brief psychological strategies to reduce distress and promote recovery among children, youth and adults following disaster.

The Skills for Psychology Recovery (SPR) training program:

Hearing voices that are distressing – A simulation workshop run by Queensland Health, Central Mental Health Clinical Sub-Network.

This workshop is based on the approach used by Arana Pearson from Keepwell Ltd (http://www.keepwell.com.au/).  The workshop aims to provide participants with the opportunity to:

  • Experience the impact of hearing voices through a  simulated experience
  • Gain a better understanding of the challenges that people with a psychiatric disability face and increase empathy
  • Evaluate their clinical practice and the clinical environment for the treatment of people who experience voices that are distressing.

Mental Health in Nursing: DVD learning package

This University of the Sunshine Coast learning product offers learning experiences to build upon and improve mental health learning in nursing programs. The resource provides information and practice opportunities for nurses (general and mental health) to develop effective, skills in using a simple model (ABC) to respond to any client with mental health needs. It can be purchased for $50.

It is a self-paced learning activity which could be used for teaching purposes or by individuals.  Individual users can complete 1 or more scenarios with the accompanying learning challenges. Children of Parents with a Mental Illness (COPMI): Free Online Course

The COPMI national initiative was funded by the Australian Infant Child Adolescent Mental Health Association (AICAFMHA) through the Department of Health and Ageing in 2007, to develop a web based e-learning resource for mental health workers in Australia. The resource has been developed in line with the National Practise Standards for the Mental Health Workforce (2002). The resource provides information for workers, in particular mental health nurses, about supporting families where a parent experiences mental illness.

HoNOS Training with Te Pou

Te Pou is New Zealand's National Centre of Mental Health Research, Information and Workforce Development. Its website has information about outcome measures and tools and training related to HoNOS. This is a free service.

The ACMHN, with the permission of Te Pou, has Endorsed the HoNOS training for professional development purposes.

This means if you complete relevant sections you can claim CPE/CPD points for your credentialing application. This program may be of use to you if you are just finding out about HoNOS or you are in need of a refresher.

How to access the HoNOS training

In order to claim CPE/CPD points, this is what you must do

To verify that you have undertaken the Te Pou program and are eligible for CPE points, you need to undertake each case study as instructed on the Te Pou site and complete the rating form until your rating is consistent with the actual rating given by Te Pou.

Each case study includes

  • Reading the story
  • Watching a video
  • Completing rating form
  • Viewing feedback on result.

At the end you can either print or email the result sheet which can then be kept and used as evidence of having completed the case studies. If you email the result sheet to yourself as this will provide a date for further support.

Endorsed CPE Points

2 CPE points for completion of each case study – a total of 14 CPE points is available for completion of all case studies.

Certificate of completion

This is offered by ACMHN if you submit copies of emails for ALL case studies. However, to be eligible for a certificate, all case studies will need to be completed within one month.
