About the Greater Western Sydney Branch

The Greater Western Sydney Branch (GWSB) was established in 2003. The Branch encompasses all the areas bounded by the LGAs of Lithgow, Campbelltown, Auburn, and Hawkesbury and includes for example, the Hills District, Parramatta, and Blue Mountains. However our membership is not limited to these areas.

Our members (mental health nurses) work across the public and private sector in a range of settings. Their various specialty areas cover the lifespan and they work in the contexts of acute care, rehabilitation, crisis work, case management, consultation liaison, drug and alcohol/dual diagnosis, primary care, and forensic mental health services. In addition to clinical practice, members also work in the areas of education, research, and management and with non-government organisations and other networks.

The Branch's key roles are to provide members and other mental health workers opportunities for education and professional development, and to provide professional representation for mental health nursing locally.

Branch Aims

  • To share information, encourage inquiry, and promote education through our annual conference and three education forums each year.
  • To facilitate opportunities for professional discussion and to strengthen professional networks.
  • To encourage knowledge sharing and dissemination of differing perspectives between members, nurses, those with an interest in mental health, and other agencies.
  • To contribute to future directions for the mental health nursing profession locally.
  • To provide links to and updates about the work of the College broadly.

A flyer is circulated via email prior to each event. Forums are free of charge and include light refreshments.

Annual Conferences

The Annual Conference is usually held on the last Friday of March each year, at The Novotel in Parramatta. The Conference promotes expansion of mental health nursing knowledge, philosophies, principles, contemporary practices and research by offering mental health nurses the opportunity to meet and hear from mental health professionals with diverse knowledge and expertise in a wide range of mental health contexts.

The Conference organising Committee are keen to ensure that the conference is accessible to students and beginning/novice nurses. To this end, the Committee welcome novice presenters to submit abstracts and offer opportunities for them to practice presentations prior to the Conference.
