CREDENTIAL FOR PRACTICE PROGRAM NEWS New Funding for Mental Health Nurses The New Funding for Mental Health Nurse initiative will fund general practices, private psychiatrist services and other appropriate organisations, for example Aboriginal Medical Services, to engage mental health nurses to assist in the provision of coordinated clinical care for people with severe mental disorders. Individuals with these disorders are a key priority for the government and engaging mental health nurses in their care is seen as essential to getting better clinical and social outcomes. Unlike the Better Access to Mental Health Services initiative, which provides time limited clinical services for each individual accessing care, the New Funding for Mental Health Nurses initiative will allow the nurse to provide the range of assessment and management interventions required by the client and their family or social support network. The Better Outcomes initiative has been extended until 2009, which will allow nurses who are currently contracted via Divisions of General Practice to continue in these roles. Organsiations that are eligible for funding under the New Funding for Mental Health Nurses Initiative are required to engage the services of a mental health nurse who has been credentialed by the College.
