Clinical Supervision Position Statement

It is the position of the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses Inc that:

  • Clinical Supervision is a core component of contemporary professional mental health nursing practice and central to practicing within the ACMHN Standards of Practice for Australian Mental Health Nurses: 2010.
  • Mental health service employers positively support and actively promote demonstrably efficacious Clinical Supervision, through organisational policies, procedures and workplace culture.
  • All mental health nurses, and nurses working in mental health facilities, be fully orientated to Clinical Supervision upon entry to the mental health workforce and thereafter engage in sustained and meaningful Clinical Supervision, whatever their role and wherever they practice.
  • Supervisors access appropriate bona fide educational preparation for this role and, whether Clinical Supervision is delivered in dyads or within groups.
  • Regular systematic evaluations of the quality and efficacy of Clinical Supervision arrangements be undertaken at local service level.
  • The ACMHN undertakes to actively promote each of these positions and lobby funding agencies to consider large-scale robust programs of outcomes-related research at State and National levels, to further strengthen the evidence base of Clinical Supervision and to justify continued investment of public funds.

The following ACMHN members are Credentialed Mental Health Nurses who have undertaken the ACMHN Perinatal Mental Health  online training program and who are registered with Medicare to provide services to women under Medicare Item Number 81010.

Under this item number, on referral from a GP, women can claim 3 sessions with a credentialed mental health nurses at a rebate of $59.85 per session.

With demonstrated competence in the care of individuals with complex mental health needs, you will have a commitment to consumer and carer participation in mental health care. Creative, innovative and flexible when approaching issues within the mental health setting, you will ideally bring experience in the supervision of student nurses, Enrolled Nurses and less experienced Registered Nurses.

About the role

The Risdon Prison Hospital is based at Risdon Vale, Tasmania, and operates under the direction of Tasmania's Forensic Mental Health Services. The complex provides community and inpatient mental health assessment, treatment and case management for offenders (or people at risk of offending) who have a mental disorder. Clients are provided with contemporary, professional and highly specialised psychiatric care and treatment so that their condition is well managed.

Salary: $93,109 to $98,010 per annum.

Please note that this position attracts a 6.5% Correctional Health Allowance, and access to free parking on-site. Relocation assistance may also be offered to the successful candidate.

The Role:  As our main Clinical Nurse Educator, you will report directly to the Director of Nursing for the Forensic Health Service. You will assist in the daily running of the unit in collaboration with Nurse Unit Managers, Clinical Nurse Consultants and the Manager of Inpatient Mental Health and Correctional Health Services. You will be responsible for the provision of direction and support to the nursing staff, as well as developing, implementing and evaluating education strategies for the Community Forensic Health team. To achieve desired outcomes, you will work in accordance with Primary Health care principles and ensure that they are delivered in a timely manner.

  • Post graduate or equivalent mental health qualification

  • This position works on a cyclic roster Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5.00pm
  • This position requires operation of a class C motor vehicle, and an appropriate licence is required

The RFT Mental Health Nurse provide services and activities related to the Mental Health Nurse Incentive Program (MHNIP).  The purpose of the MHNIP is to provide clinical care and treatment services to adults with complex and severe mental illness in a primary care setting.

  • Provide services to adults with complex and severe mental illness.  Services may include:  care/support coordination, medication management and support, recovery-based interventions and referrals to other services and programs.
  • Work closely with primary care providers to identify and refer eligible people.
  • Work within the processes and guidelines provided by RFT to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the service (and program).
  • Actively manage case load to increase access and throughput to the program
  • Maintain appropriate and up to date service records and documentation.
  • Contribute to data collection and reporting requirements.
  • Work in collaboration with the broader RFT Clinical Services Team and other stakeholders as required.
